'In this video, you will learn all about Journey of Food. We eat a variety of food everyday. The food we eat travels a long distance before it reaches our homes. Farming is a long process which involves plenty of hard work. Here are some people without whom we would not have been able to get our food. I am Ramu, a farmer. I grow crops in my fields. I first prepare the soil by ploughing it. Ploughing is done either by a tractor or by bullocks to make the soil soft and porous. My family members help me in sowing the seeds. We grow crops every year, the soil loses its nutrients over a period of time. So we add manure or fertilizers to make it rich in plant nutrients. Crops need water to grow. They are watered regularly. The supply of water given to crops at different intervals is called irrigation. Once the seeds grow into saplings they need to be protected from birds, insects, and pests. We also spray chemicals called insecticides and pesticides to protect the crops from insects and pests. Unwanted plants, called weeds, are removed because they use-up water and nutrients which are meant for the crop. Once the crops are ready, we harvest them. Harvesting is the process of gathering mature crops from the fields. The grains are then separated from the plant by threshing and winnowing. Threshing is a process of separating grains from the husk and winnowing is a process of separating grains from the chaff. The dried grains are packed in the sacks. My elder son takes them to the wholesale market, commonly called mandi. From the market, the food stuff is bought by the retailers or the shopkeepers who sell the food from their shops. We buy foodstuff from the retailers. These food items are then cleaned, washed, cooked, and served to us.
